Financial Wellness

It’s Your Journey... Navigate Your Way

Financial wellness. What is it and why is it important?

Financial wellness is simply the ability to control of your money and make smart decisions to achieve your financial goals. Financial wellness is about understanding your income, expenses, debt, investments, and insurance, and making sure they all work together to help you live the life you want.

One way to think about financial wellness is like being in shape physically. Just like you need to eat well, exercise, and get enough sleep to stay healthy, you need to manage your money to stay financially healthy. And like physical fitness, financial wellness takes effort and discipline, but the rewards it brings are well worth it!

  • Reduce stress and anxiety around your finances so you can have peace-of-mind
  • Make better decisions about your money
  • Increase savings and build wealth while reducing debt
  • Achieve financial security that will help you weather life's storms

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is financial wellness?

Financial wellness is the ability to control your money and make smart decisions to achieve your financial goals. It’s understanding your income, expenses, debt, investments, and insurance to make sure they all work in harmony so you can live the life you want without stress or worry.

  • Why do I need to think about financial wellness?

Just as you need to eat well and exercise to be physically healthy, you need to manage your finances well to stay financially healthy. If you worry about not having enough money and being in a constant state of debt, financial wellness is definitely something you need to work toward. Even if you make a good salary and pay your bills on time, you may have some money habits that can lead to financial trouble down the road. Everyone can benefit from some financial coaching; just one tweak to how you handle your finances can have a positive impact on the rest of your financial life!

  • How can a Hanscom FCU financial wellness coach help me?

Your coach will listen to you so they can understand where you are on your path to financial wellness. They’ll ask you questions that can help you get better clarity on your money issues, as well. Once they have a solid understanding of your situation, you’ll work together to create a plan that will help you reach whatever goal you have in mind, whether it’s as simple as developing a budget and learning how to control your spending, to more complex, such as figuring out a way to remedy crushing debt or deciding to retire early to start a dream business. Your coach can give you clarity and the skills you’ll need to get wherever you want to go in life.

  • Do I have to be a Hanscom FCU member to get free coaching?

You do not have to be a Hanscom FCU member to get free coaching; however, we’d love to welcome you as a member.

  • Where does the coaching take place?

Our financial coaches can meet with you in one of our 19 branches in Massachusetts and Virginia. We can even coach you through a phone or video call.

  • Is coaching confidential?

Our coaching is confidential. When you speak with one of our financial coaches, they will not flag your accounts with us or any other financial institution. We are here to help you achieve financial wellness in a safe, confidential space.

  • Will financial coaching go on my credit report?

Our financial coaches do not report anything you tell them to credit bureaus. Credit bureau reporting is highly regulated by the Fair Credit Reporting Act, legislation designed to protect your interests by setting strict rules about how sensitive information about your financial history can be reported, shared, and used.

  • Is it really free?

Yes, meeting with a Hanscom FCU financial coach is completely free.

  • Can I get coaching on just one financial challenge I’m having?

Absolutely! Maybe you need help setting up a budget and sticking to it. Maybe you want to figure out the best way to pay off a debt so you can start saving for a house down payment. Or maybe you feel insecure about money and need an experienced, certified coach as your sounding board. We’re here for you and your money journey, wherever you are on that path.

  • How much time will this take for me to see results?

This all depends on the complexity of issues you’re having with financial wellness. If you want to set a budget, it may take you one meeting to see results. On the other hand, if you’re trying to boost a credit score that’s been damaged by delinquencies, it will take much longer to see the results of your hard work to repair it. But there are other intangibles to keep in mind, like the initial sense of relief you'll feel knowing you're finally on your path to financial wellness.

  • How does Hanscom FCU benefit from this relationship?

Being a member-owned financial cooperative, we have your best interests in mind. During a coaching session, we may point out an account that pays a higher rate of return on your savings or a loan product with a lower APR than what you’re currently paying. You’ll never be pressured to follow our recommendations, and we will not require you to do so in order to continue this complimentary coaching with us. As an owner of our cooperative, when you do well, we do well. That’s how we benefit.

  • How will I know financial coaching is working?

When you meet with one of our financial coaches, you’ll work together to create a plan with actionable steps you can take to reach measurable benchmarks. When you arrive at those benchmarks, you'll have results that will show you that coaching is working for you.

Sometimes a benchmark can be hard to reach, and that’s okay. Your coach might work with you on a different strategy, look for obstacles that may be blocking your way, or help design a goal that's more achievable for you right now.
